RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A new survey is shedding some alarming light about the growing trend of texting and driving among teens.

In fact, the poll conducted by AT&T found that 97 percent of teens know texting and driving is dangerous. Forty-three percent of those same teens said they still text and drive, even though they know about the potentially deadly risks.

Eighty-nine percent of those teens surveyed blamed peer pressure for texting behind the wheel — and  75 percent of teens said they have friends who text while driving.

The survey also that 77 percent of teens have been told by adults not to text and drive. However, the teens said they see those same adults text and drive “all the time.”

Additionally, 60 percent of the teens polled admitted to texting at a red light and 73 percent admit to looking at their phone at a red light.

CBS 6 and Emroch and Kilduff are working to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving via W82TEXT. It’s a grassroots effort aimed at spreading the word about the growing danger, especially to younger drivers.
