FT. LEE, Va. (WTVR) - It's been a long road to battling a rare form of cancer for one local soldier, now he's strapping on his boots to help others beat the disease.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Patrick Kelly started out on a 100 mile, four-day march Friday morning in hopes of raising at least $5,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Kelly plans to march around the facilities at Ft. Lee- 25 miles each day- until he reaches his goal.

Sgt. Kelly was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma in May of 2010, and his cancer is currently in remission.

Members of his unit, Mike Company, 244th Quartermaster Battalion, will take donations for his "Road March for Cancer Research" at intersections on post, during Kelly's undertaking.

He's served in both Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 11 years.
