Ranking Richmond 2012

Two years in a row (2010, 2011) Richmond has been the official “Asthma Capital,” as determined by the AAFA.

The city has made quite a showing in other categories as well. Check out the lists we’ve made in 2012 so far, below.

THE GOOD:

City with highest percentage of bicycle commuters
Data from 2010 shows that Richmond has a higher percentage of cyclists than any other city/town in Virginia.

According to Amazon’s new study, Richmond ranks in the top 20 of their list of most well-read cities.

It’s the second year in a row that Bloomberg Businessweek has ranked the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business number one in the country in that category.

Deep Run sits in the 14th spot in the state.

Richmond Community and Open High School make the Top 20.

Midlothian, Cosby, Godwin and Freeman are all in the top 30 in the state.

US News and World report studied test results, class sizes, and college readiness to compile the rankings.

#2 Freshest Food

Richmond ranked second to only Hartford, Connecticut on Ziploc’s March list of the freshest cities—cities with access to fresh fruit and veggies. This comes as no surprise with a farmer’s market practically every day somewhere in the greater Richmond metro area.

THE BAD

Worst State Integrity

The Center for Public Integrity gave Virginia, and six other states an “F,” for state integrity.

They noted Virginia’s lack of campaign finance limits, lack of a statewide ethics commission, and its rules that don’t allow for open government.

#10 Buggiest States
Richmond came in 10th place, with more than 34 percent regularly using bug spray, while the national average was just nine percent.

#10 Bed Bug Problems

Richmond is the 10th worst city for bed bugs according a recent study conducted by Rollins Inc.
