As veteran groups and local governments all over the state recognized the sacrifices made by our troops on Memorial Day, Hanover County continued a long-standing tradition.

The 21-gun salute kicked off a ceremony at the Hanover Veterans Memorial where a large crowd sprinkled with families, children, veterans and county locals came to show support for the men and women of the armed services.

Brigadier General (Retired) Steven Huxtable, the honored guest speaker, told CBS 6 News the occasion is just as much about remembrance as it is about instilling a sense of duty, and loyalty, in our younger generation.

"To continue to remember our sacrifices, and sacrifices that may be needed in the future. So bringing young kids, having them remember what it took to get where we are today is keeping history alive," Huxtable said.

Huxtable said Hanover County tries to add a new wrinkle to the ceremony every year, but the main point is simply to remember the meaning of Memorial Day.
