HOUSTON (KTRK) – A Texas mom takes an pro-active approach to teaching her child the consequences of posting inappropriate material on Facebook.

Earlier this month Roshanda Tate Billingsley’s daughter posted a picture of her posing with an unopened bottle of vodka – captioned – I wish I could drink this.

“You know what’s right and wrong.  And there are to be no pictures of you half naked – anything like that. No pictures … inappropriate pictures are what I called them,” said  Billingsley. “Even though we’d had the conversation her friends were posting much worse.  So in her mind this was pretty tame.”

Not so tame said mom. She took a picture of her daughter – face not shown – holding a sign that read:

Since I want to take pictures holding liquor – I’m obviously not ready for social media and will be taking a hiatus until I learn that is and isn’t appropriate to post. Bye-bye.

Billingsley posted the picture on Facebook and Instagram.

The photo went viral. Her friends shared the picture 11,000 times on Facebook the first day.

Billingsley said her daughter had a melt down on day one. But by day two she was reading parents post on her mom’s Facebook page – in support of the punishment.

Clinical psychologist and University of Houston professor John Vincent  does not agree with the mom’s choice of punishment.

“There’s a better way. And I think the better way is building on positive things, helping kids make intelligent choices, helping them understand the consequences of their choices,” he said.”
