RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this Tuesday afternoon in central Virginia. An upper-level disturbance is tracking northeast along the Appalachian spine, providing ample lift and supportive dynamics for strong to severe storms by this afternoon, when daytime heating and instability will be best.  The primary threats with any storms that do intensify will include damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 mph and also large hail bigger than an inch in diameter. Although an isolated, brief tornado cannot be ruled out, that potential is much less than the wind damage threat. The yellow slight risk area on our regional map was issued by the Storm Prediction Center this Tuesday morning.

Even if thunderstorms do not reach severe limits, they will still be capable of strong winds, heavy downpours and frequent lightning.
