HOPEWELL, Va. (WTVR) – Hopewell’s City Manager estimates the state will get $150,000 from traffic tickets, written by sheriff’s deputies.

You might remember, a provision in Virginia’s budget says if a city or county collects more than 40% of its revenue from speeding tickets, the state will step in and take half of the excess funds.

The move was designed to cut in to some of the profits of localities writing excessive amounts of speeding tickets.

City Manager Ed Daley says the amount of revenue brought in from tickets on a one-mile stretch of Interstate 295 in Hopewell in the last year totaled roughly $1.4 million.
