(CNN) – North Carolina voters head to the polls today.

A controversial referendum is on the ballot that would ban same-sex marriages in the state.

Amendment One would change North Carolina’s constitution to say “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”

The bill proposing the amendment says only a simple majority is needed for the amendment to pass.

Indiana and West Virginia also hold primaries today.
