RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)  Metro Richmond residents won't be able to weigh in on the proposed monthly E-ZPass fee.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said it will not hold public hearings about the increase, because state law doesn't require them to do so.

Some E-ZPass users have criticized VDOT’s $1 a month fee proposal.

But VDOT claimed it needs the new fee to support an expansion in E-ZPass use.

VDOT  said that means accounts could double in the next several years because of the increasing number of tolls planned.

VDOT wants to start charging the fee on July 1.
