RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Dominion Virginia Power announced Wednesday your power bill may decrease later this year. The power company said bills could drop by about four percent by September.

Dominion said its fuel and transmission costs are down making the decrease possible. The utility’s proposed drop would mean $5.83 in monthly savings for a typical Dominion customer, the company said in a statement.

Dominion said if the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) approved the decrease, it would be the largest single fuel rate decrease since 1998.

“The mild weather that Virginia has experienced since last summer was not expected when the fuel rate was set last year,” said Dominion Virginia Power CEO Paul D. Koonce said in a statement.

In addition to the fuel rate decrease, Dominion does plan other power bills changes. Those changes include:

  • A 34-cent increase this month to cover the costs of energy efficiency programs
  • A $1.32 increase once the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center in Wise County begins operations later this summer.
  • A $2.84 increase on Aug. 1 when a credit,  applied since February, ends
