LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A one-year-old boy celebrating his first birthday died over the weekend after he was attacked by the family dog.

Jeremiah Eshew-Shahan was celebrating his first birthday late Friday at his grandmother’s home in suburban Henderson, Nevada, which is located about 17 miles southeast of Las Vegas.

Family members said the boy crawled over to the dog around 10 p.m. and began petting the six-year-old, 120-pound Mastiff/Rhodesian mix dog when it suddenly attacked the boy, locked its teeth around the boy’s head and began shaking him.

The boy’s father was upstairs when the attack occurred.

He told KSNV it took him20 seconds to run downstairs and get the dog off the baby.

The toddler was taken to a local hospital before being flown by helicopter to a trauma unit in Las Vegas. The boy died on Saturday.

The family voluntarily gave the dog to Henderson County Animal Control officers.

It will be quarantined and observed for signs of rabies over the next 10 days.

Officials said the dog, because it has been declared “vicious,” will likely be euthanized after an observation period.

Police said the dog had no prior history of attacks.
