RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – April 26 through 28, 2011 were some of the most harrowing, terrifying, and heartbreaking days of the deadly tornado outbreak in late April last year. Numerous tornadoes were confirmed in Virginia, but were just a handful among the hundreds reported across the Eastern U.S.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management says the cumulative April tornadoes (April 8, 27-28 and 26) amounted to “at least 30 tornadoes” that “killed 10 people and injured more than 100. Approximately 212 homes were destroyed, with more than 1,050 homes and businesses were damaged. The lack of federal assistance led Gov. Bob McDonnell to establish the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund to help tornado victims. The fund has since been expanded to help victims of any disaster in Virginia.”
