RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – When severe weather threatens, the National Weather Service (NWS) relies on a team of trained SKYWARN spotters to relay storm information to meteorologists.

There are about 300,000 SKYWARN spotters around the country, but the NWS is looking for more people to participate.

If you are interested, you must first go through a training course.

There are two courses coming up in Central Virginia:

One is Wednesday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. at the Emporia National Guard Armory in Emporia, Va. [Click here for Emporia SKYWARN training information]

The other is Tuesday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the Henrico County Training Center, 7701 E. Parham Rd in Henrico. [Click here for more information]
