(WTVR) - For the first time, the American Cancer Society has released new guidelines about diet and exercise for cancer survivors.

The recommendations show that regular exercise, a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight can keep some cancers from recurring.

The evidence applies to the risk of recurrence and death for multiple types of cancers, including breast, prostate, ovarian and colorectal.

The guidelines also recommend exercise and careful diet during treatment.

"In the past we used to say eat whatever you want during chemotherapy, we don't want you to be nauseas, we want you to feel good. But that's in the past now," said Dr. Alison Estabrook.

Additionally, a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, poultry and fish were found to be associated with fewer cancer deaths.
