Car hits state trooper, pedestrian in Amherst County

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A State trooper and pedestrian suffered serious injuries after they were hit by a car Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Route 29, according to WDBJ-TV.

Officials said in a news release that around 1:30 p.m. after some furniture fell off a pickup truck that was traveling south on Route 29.

The pickup had pulled over to the right shoulder to try to collect the furniture.

Officials said the state trooper stopped his vehicle in the right, southbound lane of Route 29 to prevent traffic from hitting the debris.

The trooper’s patrol car did have its emergency lights activated to alert oncoming traffic. [BONUS: Get additional coverage of this story from WDBJ7.com]

The trooper and the pickup were near a piece of furniture when a car traveling southbound on Route 29 lost control.

The car came into the right lane, striking the trooper and the pickup driver.

The trooper was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The pickup truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was also taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the pair was not injured in the crash.

Route 29 near Elon Road was closed for much of the afternoon because of the crash.

Virginia State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
