CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) – Governor Bob McDonnell took part in an Earth Week event Friday with some elementary school children.

The governor planted a tree and went on a nature hike where he and the kids spotted Red oak, birch, poplar, sweet gum and sassafras trees.

The event took place in Chesterfield County at Pocahontas State Park, the state’s largest park at 7,950 acres.

The park was first developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a federal recreation area and became Pocahontas State Park in the 1940s.

And the park’s name was actually chosen through a contest among school children.
