PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Officials released Friday the cause of death of a 46-year-old Prince George County police officer who died earlier this week.

Virginia State Police Spokesperson Sgt. Thomas Molnar said Shelly S. Crowder’s cause of death has been ruled as a drowning by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.

Crowder was off duty at the time of her death, according to police.

Molnar said state troopers were called to Crowder’s home in the 17000 block of Lebanon Road in Prince George County Monday around 9:30 p.m. [RELATED: Police say off-duty officer died at hospital after being pulled from pool]

Crowder’s husband called 911 from the couple’s home after she was pulled out of a six feet deep in-ground pool on the property.

Her husband and emergency crews performed CPR, but she later died at John Randolph Hospital.

Prince George County Police Chief Ed Frankenstein released a statement about Crowder’s death Tuesday afternoon.

Frankenstein said Shelly is survived by her husband James F. Crowder, who is also a Prince George officer. [READ MORE: Prince George Police Chief releases statement after officer’s death]

“Her spirit and enthusiasm for serving the citizens of Prince George was well admired by all who knew her and her presence will be sorely missed,” wrote Frankenstein.
