(WTKR) Firefighters from all over Hampton Roads are battling an out of control Virginia Wildfire.

Thirty-three firefighters from Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg and York County left for Rockbridge County this morning.

The fire started as just a couple dozen acres, but now more than 2,600 acres have burned.

Most of the land burning is part of the George Washington National Forest.

It’s right next to Interstate 64 which is causing traffic problems.

On Wednesday, the road was shut down for hours because smoke and flames were right beside the pavement.

The fire has also threatened homes.

Firefighters from Hampton Roads expect to be on the ground in Rockbridge County for two days but that depends on the weather.
