RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Two storm systems will impact our Wednesday weather in Virginia, and will likely produce some scattered strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening. A low pressure system in eastern Canada will send a seasonably strong cold front southbound through Virginia this afternoon. But before that front arrives, this morning low-level moisture is returning from the southwest as winds transport higher dew-point temperatures back into our region. This is because of a broad low pressure system from the Central U.S. that has a history of producing severe weather. The warm front well ahead of that surface low in the Midwest is moving northeast through the Commonwealth this morning. When the approaching cold front from our north meets the warm, moist air-mass returning to Virginia this afternoon, scattered strong to severe storms should develop and move southeast through the Commonwealth between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. The Metro Richmond area’s current estimated time-frame for storms is between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Risks include damaging straight line wind gusts and some large hail. Any of these storms, though, will be capable of lightning and heavy downpours.
