ROANOKE, Va.—Over the past decade, airline carriers have added extra fees for fliers.

Allegiant Airlines, a low-cost airline based out of Las Vegas, announced that they will charge passengers a carry-on luggage fee.

This makes the airline, which flies out of Roanoke, the second major airline in the U.S. to introduce such a fee.

The fee will be $35 for bags that don’t fit under the seat or in the lap.

Florida-based Spirit Airlines was the first major airline in the U.S. in 2010 to charge a fee of up to $45 for  carry-on bags.

Airlinereporter.com reports that the new fee goes into effect for Allegiant Air as early as Wednesday.

Passengers will be allowed one free personal item like a purse, briefcase or laptop according to the site.

The site also mentions that passengers may be able to whittle down that fee by paying online in advance.

Allegiant has not confirmed how much the fee will cost if purchased in advance, but inside sources have explained that they expect it to be between $14.99-29.99 — which matches Allegiant’s checked bag fees. The difference in price is route specific and depends on the length of the flight flown.
