(WTVR) – Ammonia treated beef or lean finely textured beef or “pink slime” is back in the news again.
The additive was the focus of a portion of last night’s “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central. Stewart’s routine showed just how the “pink slime” is created in meat processing plants.
Meanwhile, officials are saying lean finely textured beef is healthy and perfectly safe to eat.
At a recent press conference, the U.S. Secretary of Agricutlure Tom Vilsack and Iowa Governor Terry Branstad spoke in support of the “pink slime.” [READ MORE: Officials: ‘Pink slime’ is healthy and safe]
Secretary Vilsack described the beef as “healthy, safe and generally less expensive.”
However, several grocery chains are no longer adding the product to beef after shoppers complained. Many school districts are nixing meat with the filler. [READ MORE: Martin’s to no longer sell ammonia treated beef]
One beef company announced the closures of three plants because of the recent backlash, prompting Gov. Branstad to defend the product and fight for the jobs and future of cattle producers in Iowa.
