Rescuers in California raced against time to free a gray whale from fishing netting.

A 20-foot gray whale tangled in netting was freed Thursday afternoon off the coast of Redondo Beach, California.

The incident was the second time in six days that a gray whale had been found in danger on the coast.

The first whale was able to swim away after rescuers cut it free.

The U.S. Coast Guard vessel spotted the second whale on Wednesday.

Pacific Marine Mammal Center's rescue teams say an older whale, possibly the mother whale, never left the younger tangled whale's side until it was freed.
