RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Demonstrators planned to gather on VCU’s campus Monday evening for a peaceful protest called “Taking a Stand: We are Trayvon Martin.”

Organizers asked anyone planning to attend to wear hoodies and bring a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea, a reference to items Martin carried when he was shot and killed last month.

After the protest, everyone will be asked to write a letter “surrendering” to Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee. Organizers say paper, envelopes and stamps will be provided.

The protest will be held from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on the VCU Student Commons Plaza.

Martin was killed as he walked through a neighborhood in the Orlando suburb of Sanford. Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman said he shot Martin after the teenager attacked him.

Zimmerman was not arrested because of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law.”
