RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Richmond police still search for red van that struck 6-year-old Leonardo Vitervo.

For the Vitervo family, the sadness is incalculable.

Florencia Vitervo says her little brother Leonardo, was seriously injured Thursday night by a hit and run driver. Police say it happened right in front of the family’s home.

“I don`t know I was inside getting ready to go to work when my sister came and [Leonardo] was right there [on the ground]… He hurt his head. He was full of blood,” she said.

Richmond police say it happened around 5 p.m. at Rudd’s Trailer Park off the 2600 block of Jeff Davis Highway.

Witnesses say Leonard was playing in front of the trailers on the road with several other kids when a van came zooming by, and hit him. Police say the van dragged him for several feet.

Leonardo was rushed to VCU Medical Center with road rash, broken ribs and lacerations to his head.

The speed limit at the trailer park is 10 miles an hour. Florencia Vitervo says this is the first time she's heard of anyone speeding in the neighborhood.

“I see cars, and when they see kids they slow down,” she said.

Florencia says she hopes police find the driver who she says almost killed her brother.

“I see kids playing out here, but I don`t want this to happen to what happened to my little brother,” she said.

Florencia says Leonardo is a student at Summer Hill Elementary.

Police say they’re looking for a red van that might have been in the 2600 block of Jeff Davis Highway around 5 p.m. Thursday.
