The DVD rental for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” officially released on Tuesday and along with it came some confusion.
The Telegraph posted that Redbox—a rental kiosk—had to warn viewers that the DVD was in fact, legitimate.
In addition to the move synopsis was included this warning: NOTE TO RENTERS: Thehandwritten look on the disc of this movie is legitimate and is intended to look like a burned DVD.
The Washington Post added more depth to the story by pointing out that Midwest Tape, a media distribution company, also issued a warning on their blog. The company distributes to public libraries.
The blog noted that there has been confusion surrounding David Fincher’s release and that many believed they had received a pirated copy: “Sony designed the DVD and its packaging to reflect the theme of the movie and its popular hacker protagonist, Lisbeth Salander.”
The Telegraph article also suggested that the design could be a commentary on rampant bootlegging, but that is not confirmed by Sony.
