HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - A Henrico County judge denied bond for a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend. In court Monday morning, 19-year-old Alvin Marshall was charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in connection with the March 13 shooting death of Tiffany Green.

The court appointed Chris Collins to be Marshall's attorney.  Jerrita Patterson, who was in the Henrico County Courthouse, reported Marshall was being held in isolation after an assessment by jail staff upon his release from VCU Medical Center.  The Henrico Commonwealth's attorney, Shannon Taylor, spoke about the charges following Monday's arraignment.

"We have charged him with a premeditated crime, so the information and the evidence we have at this time appears that this crime had some type of premeditation element to it," said Taylor.

Police took Marshall to the hospital after his arrest.  When officers found Marshall, he was unconscious inside an abandoned apartment on Chamberlayne Avenue. They said  it was clear Marshall had ingested something and needed medical attention.

After the arrest, a family friend told CBS 6 that Marshall was mentally ill.

“In his right mind and on medication, he wouldn’t have did that,” said Valafsie Walters.

Walters said Marshall had a mental illness and would only run into trouble when he wasn’t taking his medication.

“I have seen Alvin jump out the bedroom window, when he’s not on his medicine. But when he’s on the medicine, he’s the perfect child, the perfect little boy. I just don’t know what happened,” Walters said.

Marshall is due back in court on May 23, 2012 for a preliminary hearing.
