RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. are adjusting their recipe.

The companies want to make sure California doesn’t put cancer warning labels on their bottles and cans.

In fact, both soda makers are changing how the drinks’ caramel coloring is made, but will do it nationwide, not just for California.

The state added a compound known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) to its list of carcinogens and the color additive has some levels of it.

The American Beverage Association says the drinks are not a health risk for people and says California added the compound to its carcinogen list without any studies showing it causes cancer in humans.
