RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – 150 years ago, two revolutionary warships fought in a celebrated battle; the first battle between ironclad ships. The USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (Merrimack) redefined naval warfare in a battle that had the Confederates won could have opened the James River to shipping in a critical time.
The battle raged on for two days, with neither side gaining a decisive win.
A commemoration is being held at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News this weekend. To find more information, just follow this link: www.battleofhamptonroads.com.
