HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -  When Henrico County Public School students head to classes in the fall, the new school year may usher in a new school schedule.

"We want to give our kids the same advantages as the other school divisions," said Patrick Kinlaw, Deputy Superintendent for Policy and Elementary Education for Henrico County Public Schools.

Kinlaw said one option up for consideration includes extending classroom time for elementary students by 15 minutes.

"If you think about 15 minutes each day, times 180 school days, that's a lot of time,” said Kinlaw.

Other proposed changes include shortening the days for middle school and high school students by five to 10 minutes.  Kinlaw said this in turn could improve transportation efficiencies, by eliminating double bus runs.  Also the proposed schedule would provide additional planning time for elementary teachers.

"This will give students and teachers more time for the instructional day and also puts us in a better position compared to other school districts throughout the state,” said Kinlaw.

Parents, community members, school staff and teachers are encouraged to fill out the assessment.  Officials plan to present information from the survey to the Henrico County School Board on March 23, 2012.
