The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse will take your breath away while you navigate over steep forested hills, wide plateaus, and abrupt ravines.

Against this tumultuous backdrop, Mike Stranz has balanced the danger of deep bunkers and long carries with the safety of broad fairways and enormous putting greens to create one of the most beautiful mountain courses you will ever play.

Stonehouse opened to rave reviews in 1996 and has since been described by avid golfers as "mind-boggling" and "larger than life."

Together with its sister courses, Royal New Kent, Kiskiack and The Crossings, Stonehouse provides one of the finest golf experiences available on the East Coast.

STONEHOUSE FACTS

  • The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse was named "Best New Upscale Public Course in the Nation" by Golf Digest and one of the "Top New 10 You Can Play" by Golf Magazine when it opened in 1996.
  • Stonehouse ranks among the top 6 courses in Virginia, according to Golf Digest, 2001. Stonehouse is also on Golf Magazine's "Top 100 You Can Play" and Golf & Travel's list of "100 Best Modern Courses".
  • Located just outside Williamsburg, Va., in Toano, Va., Stonehouse was designed by one of the most innovative golf architects in the business, Mike Strantz, a former protégé of Tom Fazio.
  • Strantz, who walked the site for three months before routing the design - which routes through virgin hardwoods, deep ravines and creeks and features elevation changes of up to 70 feet - envisioned creating a mountain-style course that disturbed nature as little as possible.
  • Stonehouse may not be the only treasure at this intriguing site. Stories have it that Captain John Smith and his settlers created the original Stonehouse as a fort. Others say Virginia hero Nathaniel Bacon may have used Stonehouse as a hideout - while fighting the despised Governor's forces. And finally, Blackbeard, one of the most ruthless pirates of all, might have buried his treasures here.
  • Stonehouse's sister course, Royal New Kent, another Strantz design that has captured numerous awards, is located 15 miles away in Providence Forge, Va.

COURSE FEATURES

  • Carved from hardwoods and an understory of holly and mountain laurel on rugged land, Legends of Stonehouse resembles an Appalachian mountain course.
  • With deep bunkers and long carries, the par 71 Stonehouse is an extraordinary synthesis of incredible topography and imagination.
