Civil rights advocate John Mitchell Jr. honored

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) – John Mitchell Jr. was born into slavery in Richmond, but dedicated his life as an adult to fight for justice for Virginians.

He served as Editor of the Richmond Planet, founder and president of Mechanics Savings Bank and as city alderman for Jackson Ward and so Saturday, February 25, at 11am, The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia along with members of the Mitchell family, will honor him with a new grave marker at Evergreen Cemetery.

The museum is also featuring “Shackles”, the newest exhibit in collaboration with the Boys and girls club of Richmond, Shackles is abut slavery and its aftermath in African American History.
