HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Richmond man was arrested early Thursday morning after a police pursuit that exceeded speeds of 100 mph, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Molnar confirmed to CBS 6 in an email.

Molnar said around 3:00 a.m. Thursday, a Virginia State trooper pulled over a car driving 88 mph in a 65-mph zone along Interstate 64 west near the Interstate 295 ramp in eastern Henrico County.

After running the driver’s license, the trooper discovered the man was wanted in Henrico on drug distribution charges, Molnar said.

As a second trooper arrived on scene to help, Molnar said the driver drove off and entered onto Interstate 295 west.

Molnar said the driver hit speeds of more than 100 mph.

When the driver stopped near the Meadow Road overpass to drop off his passengers, a second trooper pulled in front of the car.

Instead of dropping off his passengers, the driver hit the gas, and  ran into the trooper’s car. Molnar said.

That’s when another trooper boxed-in the suspect’s vehicle.

Police arrested Robert D. Johnson, of Cricklewood Drive in Richmond, and charged him with felony eluding police, assault on a trooper and misdemeanor reckless driving, Molnar said. Police also served Johnson with the warrant from Henrico County for felony distribution of a controlled substance.

The passengers in the car Johnson was driving were not arrested.
