RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – No doubt many were surprised to see the upbeat LL Cool J start the Grammy’s with a prayer to the fallen angel Whitney Houston.

“I think he came across very classy,” said  Bill Eubank of Richmond. “It was very refreshing.”

Then, to no one’s surprise, Adele all but swept the Grammys. She’s not your stereotypical pop star. No flash, no clothing malfunction, no rehab, just her amazing voice and a microphone.

We ran into several people who found Adele and the good-guy winning streak refreshing.

“People who have talent that don’t have to go out there and showcase some bizarreness just to make it,” said Pam Bishop.

Kim Menges was delighted with Adele’s win and performance. “I could watch it with my children without feeling uncomfortable. And it was great music!”

Sandie Albis enjoys getting a break from the flash. “That’s why I like that show, ‘The Voice,’ because they don’t know what you look like. They go strictly for the voice.”

Earlier Sunday, boy scout  Phil Mickelson – who stood by his wife with honor during her fight against breast cancer –  totally eclipsed playboy Tiger Woods at the storied Pebble Beach golf course.

And the world is watching as Christian miracle worker Jeremy Lin has come from nowhere to electrify the New York Knickerbockers, a replay of sorts of another young player he much admires, Denver quarterback Tim Tebow.

And, of course, there was another boy scout beating another playboy in one of the most watched events in world history, Super Bowl 46.

Yes, playboys and playgirls make the world more interesting.

But it’s the scouts who keep it running.

“I don’t think that any professional athlete or actor or actress, really signs up to be a role model,” said Kim Menges. “But ultimately they are. So it’s really nice to have these people in the spotlight who are good people and can show our children you don’t need to have a lot of flash to win.”

“Look, good guys can finish first,” said Bill Eubank as he left the W. Broad Street Barnes & Noble. “You can make it with honesty and integrity.”

So, does all this mean the world is coming to an end soon, as predicted?

Nope, it’s a safe bet the usual freak show will resume shortly.

But not yet. Tuesday night I’ll bring you the story of a young woman here who wants to live a no-holds barred life that inspires others.

She’s a good girl who’s definitely not finishing last, like rest of these refreshingly healthy people.
