CULPEPER, Va. (WTVR) – The woman shot and killed by a police officer was dragging the officer with her vehicle when she was shot, according to an update from Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler.

Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate Thursday’s officer-involved shooting in Culpeper, Virginia.

Sgt. Tyler said a Culpeper officer approached Patricia Cook, 54, as she sat in a Jeep Wrangler parked outside a church along the 300 block of North East Street Thursday morning.

The officer was called to the parking lot to investigate a report of a suspicious woman.

While the woman was getting her ID to show the officer, she quickly closed the driver’s side window and trapped the officer’s arm, Tyler said

While being dragged by the Jeep, Tyler said the officer ordered the woman to stop driving. When she did not, Tyler said shots were fired. The Jeep wrecked along the 200 block of North East Street.

Cook was pronounced dead on the scene. The officer, who was not seriously hurt, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Virginia State Police investigation.
