RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Virginia State Police said a multi-vehicle injury accident closed two lanes of the Shockoe Valley Bridge in Richmond Thursday afternoon. As a result, the center and left lanes were closed on the bridge heading eastbound, for about two hours.

Officials said they were called to two separate crashes on Interstate 64 eastbound on the Shockoe Valley Bridge around 4:10 p.m.

In the first accident, the driver of a 2007 Chrysler, Charles Pannell, 33, of Richmond, was charged with making an unsafe lane change.

The first chain reaction crash occurred when Pannell, traveling in the center lane, attempted to change lanes and struck a 2008 Volvo and 2011 Nissan Sentra, said Sgt. Molnar.

The impact with the Volvo caused the Volvo to then hit the rear of a 2001 Dodge Stratus, which was pushed into the rear of a 2009 Ford Pick-up.

The sixth vehicle, a 2006 Lincoln Continental, struck the Chrysler.

Molnar said that all drivers had their deat belts on and the drivers of the Chrysler and Nissan were transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center with minor injuries.

The lanes were cleared at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The second crash occurred when a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, was rear-ended by a 1997 Toyota, after coming to a stop because of the first crash. The driver suffered minor injuries and was also transported to VCU Medical Center. The driver of the Toyota was not injured, but was charged with following too close.
