32nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — The 32nd National Veterans Wheelchair games are coming back to Richmond.

More than 600 wheelchair athletes are expected to participate in 17 different sports.

Organizers with McGuire Veteran’s Medical Center are looking for 3,000 volunteers to help.

“We are so proud of our community and know that everyone will want to embrace the games because it’s bringing our heroes to our community…our nation’s heroes who’ve served and worked for us. the freedoms that you and I have today, so I know they’re going to want to step up and be part of this.”

The wheelchair games run June 25 through June 30, 2012.

The first National Veterans Wheelchair Games were held in 1981 in Richmond, Vir.

That year, 74 veterans from 14 states competed in sports ranging from table tennis and billiards, to swimming and weightlifting.
