RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Martin Luther King Jr. Day is being celebrated Monday in Virginia and around the nation.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell issued a statement Monday morning which read in part, "Today we pause to remember a great leader, statesman, visionary and activist who helped inspire a nation to believe in a shared dream of equality, understanding and inclusion that was spawned by our Founding Fathers, grew though the travails of generations of Americans, and resulted in the greatest nation in the world." The annual community Mass Meeting to honor Dr. King began at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Baptist Church on North 28th Street.

The program included a play based on the life of Henry Box Brown. Brown was a Louisa County slave who put himself in a box and shipped himself to freedom.
