Statue stolen from historic Richmond cemetery

RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) - A 27-inch statue was stolen from the Hebrew Cemetery, operated by Congregation Beth Ahabah, according to a Richmond police press release.

Police said the statue, described as a bronze, 20th century statue created by Lithuanian artist David Aronson, was stolen sometime between Thursday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 20, 2011.

The Hebrew Cemetery opened at its current location on 4th and Hospital Streets in 1817, according to theCongregation Beth Ahabah website.

The website indicated the Hebrew Cemetery was the first Jewish cemetery in Virginia and was the final resting place for 30 Jewish Confederate soldiers.

Police ask anyone with information about the missing statue to call Crimestoppers at (804) 780-1000.
