SUSSEX COUNTY, VA (WTVR) - A Sussex County Sheriff's Deputy was listed in serious but stable condition Wednesday afternoon following a head-on collision.

Virginia State Police said Deputy Carlos Turner crashed into another car while responding to a tractor trailer accident on Interstate 95 Wednesday morning.

The deputy and the driver of the other car involved in the crash, identified as Jason Davis, were flown to the hospital by Med-Flight with serious injuries.

Both Deputy Turner, 37, and Davis, 31, were unresponsive, but breathing, when state police arrived.

State Police Spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the deputy was responding to an accident involving a semi on southbound Interstate 95 near mile marker 33.

She said the deputy lost control of his car on Route 40, ran off the road, over-corrected and hit another vehicle head-on.

Troopers said David Jeffries, swerved to avoid another vehicle, ran off the road and overcorrected causing him to lose control of his semi.

Jeffries, who suffered minor injuries, was charged with Reckless Driving.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
