Connor O'Leary, 25, is charged with reckless driving and felony eluding of a law enforcement officer.

RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) – University of Richmond Police are notifying the campus community that Connor O’Leary, a suspect in Tuesday’s early morning incident at the University Forest Apartments, is in custody at the Henrico County Jail. O’Leary turned himself in Tuesday evening to Henrico County Police.

O’Leary, 25, is charged with reckless driving and felony eluding of a law enforcement officer. He is not a student or employee of the university.

Around 4:30 a.m., University Police approached O’Leary, who was in a SUV at the University Forest Apartments on campus.

Brian Eckert, UR spokesman said that during the interaction between police and O’Leary, the police officer discharged his gun.

“At the time of the incident, the police who were on the scene determined that it really wasn’t necessary for there to be an urgent alert,” said Eckert. “The incident occurred near an entrance to the campus and immediately moved off the campus.”

However, Eckert said the campus was not locked down, but that students were alerted about the incident.

“It was pretty terrifying knowing that if I had even been outside, I would’ve been in danger,” said student Sarah Vinall. “Especially since it’s exam week [and] a lot of students are shuffling back and forth walking in between the library and apartments.”

A CBS6 viewer confirmed that information and sent us a copy of the email they allegedly received from the university.

The below copy is from LaTanya Mealy, as it reportedly came from the university:

Early this morning, UR Police approached a suspicious SUV parked in the University Forest Apartments. During the interaction, a URPD officer discharged his firearm. The investigation is continuing with the cooperation of the Henrico County Police Department.
