HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – The man accused of stabbing a co-worker inside a Martin’s grocery store was denied bond during a hearing Monday morning in Henrico County, Virginia.

Henrico Police arrested 29-year-old Derek C. James following last week’s stabbing. James is charged with malicious wounding.

James is being held in a mental health watch cell at the Henrico County jail.

The judge cited the crime James is accused of committing and his current mental state as reasons for denying bond.

Police say on the morning of September 22, 2011, James got into an argument with a female co-worker who was beginning her shift at Martin’s inside the Village Shopping Center at the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Three Chopt Road.

During the argument, witnessed by a group of co-workers, police say James stabbed the woman multiple times. The woman survived the attack.

When a co-worker chased James following the stabbing, police say James stabbed himself.

Henrico Police have not discussed any connection, beyond a working relationship, between James and the woman.
