RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – If you are uninsured or underinsured, you may be eligible for a free or reduced cost mammogram.

The program is open to African American women in the Tri-cities and the Crater Health District.

According to the American Cancer Society, this area has one of the highest mortality rates in Virginia from breast cancer among African American women.

Doctors at Virginia State University want to save lives.

V-S –U Health Services has been awarded a 50-thousand dollar grant from the Central Virginia Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The money will be used to fund a year long series of breast cancer awareness and prevention programs that includes free mammograms for uninsured or under -insured African American women.

The services will be provided from January 2011 through December 2011.

Dr. Rebecca Griffin says they have a contract with a facility in the area where women will go to receive a digital mammogram.

If the results come back abnormal, Dr. Griffin says money is built in to the grant to provide free follow up care.

To qualify, you must be over the age of 35, or have a have a family history of breast cancer.
